Golf has many origins across the globe. Many ball and stick games were around and many countries state their claim that from this early origins they invented golf.
China shows illustrations upon the scrolls depicting guests participating in a game which involved hitting a ball to a target. These scrolls date back to the 12th century. The Netherlands have records from the 13 century of a golf like game were a leather ball was hit in as few strokes as possible to a target. The Scottish sand dunes were an ideal place to hit a pebble with a stick. Early records detail laws that the game of golf was banned in the British isles 1457 by James II to ensure training and military preparation was carried out should the country need defending. Military training was mandatory for all men and many were found to be neglecting their training in favour of playing golf.

It wasn't until 1893 that the Chicago golf club expanded its existing facility to 18 holes. Other famous courses that exist are Augusta where the Golf masters is played each year.
With increasing participation especially through the 19th century, golf was included on the Olympic programme in 1900.
Golf was amateur in nature, however money became involved through the betting on players and challenge matches. This evolved into money winning tournaments and evolving the sport into a professional game. In line with this evolution and to elevate the standards of the game the Professional Golfers Association (PGA), was founded in Britain in 19O1 and later expanded to individual countries. The first PGA championships were held in 1916 with $500 dollar's as the prize money. Today many tournaments, such as the masters, PGA tour, Ryder cup and other competitions are now overseen or run by the PGA, with prize winning money that exceeds 3 million US dollars.
The WPGA ( Women's Professional Golf Association) was later created in 1950 establishing a platform for professional woman golfers, with the first professional tournament being held in Florida in 1950.
Golf was played with wooden clubs that were handcrafted, and balls that were stuffed with feathers and wrapped with horse hide. A distant relative to todays technologically advanced carbon fiber and aluminum clubs. With the dimpled golf ball aerodynamically designed to ensure ultimate accuracy.
